Not Sure If You Have a Case?

The Dangers You Face Every Shift

First responders face hazards that most workers never encounter. Whether you’re a firefighter, police officer, sheriff’s deputy, correctional officer, or paramedic, these are the risks you face:

Why First Responders Get Injured

You’re trained. You’re careful. You follow protocols. But injuries still happen because of:

The Injuries That End Careers and Change Lives

First responder injuries often go beyond broken bones. You may be dealing with:

These injuries often require extensive treatment, time off work, and can permanently change your ability to serve. You need attorneys who understand first responder injuries and California’s special workers’ compensation laws.

California's Special Benefits for First Responders

Here's something many first responders don't know:
California law provides special workers' compensation benefits that regular workers don't get.

You May Be Entitled To:

Full Salary for One Year (4850 Benefits) If you’re a paid firefighter or police officer injured on duty, you may receive your full salary—not just two-thirds—for up to one year while you recover. These benefits are tax-free.

Presumptive Injury Coverage California law presumes certain conditions are work-related for first responders, meaning you don’t have to prove your injury came from work. This includes:

  • Cancer (if you can show exposure to known carcinogens)
  • Heart disease
  • Lung disease and respiratory conditions
  • PTSD and mental health injuries
  • Hepatitis and bloodborne infectious diseases
  • Tuberculosis and other contagious diseases

Extended Coverage After Retirement Some conditions diagnosed shortly after retirement may still be covered under workers’ compensation if you served for enough years.

These special protections exist because California recognizes the unique sacrifices first responders make. But insurance companies won’t tell you about these benefits—and they’ll fight to avoid paying them.

That’s where The Comp Firm comes in.
